Love Made Useful

John 21:15–17

Three times Jesus commands Peter, “Feed my flock.” This repeated charge restores Peter to apostolic service after his fall and teaches a lasting lesson to the whole church: love for Christ is proven by usefulness to others. True devotion is not loud profession, impulsive zeal, or dramatic action, but steady, patient, sacrificial care for Christ’s people in a broken world. This is the mark of a true disciple and the secret of Christian greatness—following the Son of Man who came not to be served, but to serve (Matt. 20:26–28).

Let this parting command of our Lord shape our consciences and daily lives. Scripture records it for our instruction. We are called to a loving, hardworking, humble, and unselfish faith—one that seeks the good of others, eases sorrow, and multiplies joy. Living this way, we discover the truth of our Lord’s words: “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35).

The desire to be useful to God must outweigh the desire to be important before men.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus,

You who loved us to the end, teach us to love You not only in words, but in faithful service. Shape our hearts to care for Your people with patience, humility, and joy. Free us from the desire to be seen, and make us eager to be useful in Your hands. By Your Spirit, help us feed and care for Your flock for Your glory.

Amen.
