First Things First: Seek One Thing

In Matthew 6:33, Jesus speaks into our restless, anxious hearts with surprising simplicity: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.”

We often live the other way around. We chase security, recognition, control—and then try to fit God in somewhere after. But Jesus gently turns our lives right-side up. He calls us to put God—not our needs, not our image, not our plans—at the very center.

To seek His kingdom is to want His rule more than our own. It’s learning to say, “Your will be done,” not just in prayer, but in decisions, relationships, and the quiet places no one sees. And to seek His righteousness is not about trying to impress God with our goodness, but about a life being slowly reshaped to look like Christ—honest, pure, humble, and full of love.

What makes this freeing is the promise attached: “and all these things will be added to you.” Jesus isn’t ignoring your needs—He’s securing them. When the Father has your heart, you can trust Him with everything else.

And the deepest reason we can live this way is Jesus Himself. He sought the Father’s kingdom perfectly, never wavering, never grasping—and then gave His righteousness to us. So now we don’t seek to be accepted; we seek because we already are.

Today, you don’t need to carry the weight of running your own life. You can lay it down. Fix your heart on Christ. Trust the Father. And take the next step of simple, quiet obedience.

Prayer:

Father, my heart is easily pulled in a hundred directions. Draw it back to You. Teach me to seek Your kingdom first and to trust that in Christ, I already have all I truly need. Amen.
