When Believers Profess Their Faith Together

When followers of Jesus gather for corporate worship, we remind one another of what we believe. We call this professing our faith.

Often, we profess our faith using the Apostles’ Creed . This creed chronicles in summary fashion “the most exciting drama that ever staggered the imagination of man. God’s plan of rescuing sinful man is the greatest drama ever staged…” (Dorothy Sayers, Creed or Chaos) .

The Holy Spirit uses the truths of the Creed to teach us what we believe, but also to teach us how best to live our lives. It reminds us that:

  • Our lives are lived best with the triune God at the center: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • Our lives are lived best knowing confidently what we believe.
  • Our lives are lived best relationally. The creed reminds us that we enjoy a vertical relationship with our Father and horizontal relationships with our brothers and sisters.
  • Our lives are lived best remembering the cross before the crown — death before resurrection. This reminds us that suffering and death do not have the final word in a believer’s life. Our earthly journey is indeed filled with suffering and sorrows. Yet, the final word for worshippers of Jesus is life everlasting.
  • Therefore, let us gladly worship our life-giving Lord!
