Matthew 24:36–51
Jesus often speaks of His return with one clear command: “Stay awake.” He knows how easily our hearts grow dull and distracted. We are quick to forget eternal realities and settle into spiritual sleep. Yet His coming will be sudden—like a thief in the night—and only those who are watchful will be ready.
1. Live like a Watchman.
True believers are called to stand guard. Like a sentry in enemy territory, we must stay alert, resisting the temptation to drift or delay repentance. Paul exhorts us: “So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober” (1 Thess. 5:6). The one who watches is not fearful but faithful—awake to God’s presence and purpose in every ordinary day.
2. Live like a Faithful Servant.
Our Master has gone, but He will return. The wise servant doesn’t grow careless or cynical when the wait feels long. Instead, he keeps working with joy, ready to open the door the moment his Lord appears. Jesus says, “Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes” (v. 46). Readiness isn’t anxiety—it’s steady obedience.
3. Live with Holy Expectation.
The second coming of Christ isn’t a topic for speculation but a call to sanctification. “Everyone who thus hopes in Him purifies himself as He is pure” (1 John 3:3). The promise of His return should shape how we live today—with faith, integrity, and love.
So let’s examine our hearts. Are we living ready? Are we awake to His presence and prepared for His appearing? The timing of His return is hidden—but the call to watch is clear.
For Meditation:
Whatever we don’t understand about the future, one truth stands firm—Jesus is coming again. Let’s live each day as those who long to hear His words: “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
