Jesus submitted to arrest by His own choice. He could have called legions of angels to defend Him (v. 53), yet He allowed Himself to be bound and led away. He did this to fulfill the Scriptures, to be the true Passover Lamb, and to carry the sins of the world. His surrender was voluntary, His purpose unwavering.
This gives us deep encouragement: the same Son of God who willingly submitted to suffering is ready to save all who flee to Him. We can trust Him and need not fear.
The disciples’ fear shows our own weakness. Their bold promises of loyalty evaporated in the face of danger (v. 56). How often we, too, make confident vows of faith only to falter under trials. This humbles us and calls us to cultivate lowliness, vigilance, and trust in Christ.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You are the willing Sufferer and Savior. Rescue us from the weakness of our hearts and help us cling to You in every trial. Strengthen our faith, and keep us humble and steadfast in Your love. Amen!
