Before Abraham’s servant ever speaks to Rebekah, he speaks to the LORD. Faced with a weighty decision, he does not rely on instinct, experience, or strategy—he prays. Genesis 24 shows us a way of praying that is humble, hopeful, and deeply God-centered.
First, he prays in dependence. “O LORD… give me success today” (Gen. 24:12). He knows God must act if the mission is to succeed. Real prayer begins when we stop pretending we’re self-sufficient.
Second, he prays in light of God’s promises. He appeals to the covenant God made with Abraham. His confidence rests not in himself, but in the LORD’s steadfast love. Our prayers grow strong when they are anchored in who God is and what He has said.
Third, he prays specifically—and then watches carefully. When God answers, the servant pauses, discerns, and gives God room to confirm His work. Faith does not rush ahead of God’s providence.
Finally, he responds with worship. Before reporting success or completing the task, he bows and praises the LORD. Gratitude comes first.
This passage ultimately points us to Christ—the true Servant—who perfectly trusted the Father, carried out His will, and secured every covenant promise for us. Because Jesus has finished the work, we pray not to earn God’s favor, but from it.
Prayer:
Lord, teach us to pray first, trust fully, watch attentively, and praise quickly—resting in Christ, our faithful Servant and Savior.
