The Stunning and Comforting Truth of Election

In John 15:16, Jesus reminds us of a stunning truth: “You did not choose me, but I chose you … that you should go and bear fruit.” Our faith is not an accident. Long before we ever thought of Him, He had set His love on us.

Election is a mystery too deep for us to ever fully explain or understand. Why Christ opens the eyes of some and not others belongs to the secret counsel of God. But this much is certain: without His Spirit calling us, we would never have come. If we are saved, it is because Christ first chose us; and our song forever will be, “Salvation is of the Lord.”

Yet election is never merely about rescue—it is also about transformation. He chooses us not just to be His, but to bear fruit that lasts. True election shows itself in faith, love, and obedience that others can see. Where there is no fruit, there is no evidence of His choosing.

When we grasp this truth, it does not frighten us but comforts us. It tells us that our salvation rests not in chance, nor in our own strength, but in the steadfast love of Christ.

We are Christians not by accident, but by God’s gracious choice—and that is a truth sweet enough to rest our souls upon.
