“I Have Many People in This City”

Acts 18:10

These simple words were spoken to strengthen a discouraged apostle in a difficult place—and they remain a deep well of confidence for Christ’s people today.

God reminds Paul of an important truth. Even in a city full of idolatry, immorality, and indifference to the gospel, God had already chosen a people for Himself. This divine choice was certain. These were men and women still lost and blind. They were still running from God. They were loved from eternity, purchased by Christ, and destined to believe through the proclamation of the Word (John 6:37; 10:16).

This is the wonder of sovereign grace:

  • Christ has redeemed a people—some already gathered, many not yet awakened.
  • Christ is interceding for them, even before they pray for themselves (John 17:20).
  • Christ’s Spirit will unfailingly bring them to repentance and faith at the appointed time (Ps. 110:3).

So, we preach, witness, and pray with confidence—not because people are willing, but because Jesus is mighty to save. His cross is not an uncertain attempt but a victorious achievement. All whom He purchased with His blood will be brought from darkness into light, from rebellion into joyful obedience.

So take heart as you speak His Word. In your city, your workplace, your family, there are “many” whom Christ intends to call. You may not see them yet. They may seem far gone. But the Shepherd knows His sheep, and He will gather them all.

Christ has people in this city.

Go, speak, and trust Him to draw His own.
