Jesus first appeared to the women. For they were last at the cross, and first at the tomb. He entrusted them with the news of His resurrection. His first thought after rising in glory was for His scattered disciples. And His words are astonishing: “My brethren.”
Though the disciples had failed, fled, and feared, Jesus still claimed them as His own. Like Joseph embracing the brothers who betrayed him, Jesus shows tender mercy to weak and wavering followers. The risen Conqueror of death remains meek and lowly of heart—our elder Brother as well as our great High Priest.
How slow the first disciples were to believe! Despite Jesus’ clear predictions, the empty tomb, angelic testimony, and multiple witnesses, they doubted. Yet Christ did not cast them off. And we are often no different—hesitant, fearful, slow to trust.
But take comfort: Jesus never forgets His people. He knows our frailty and does not despise it. He holds fast those who belong to Him.
Even in our doubt and weakness, Christ still calls us His brethren. He never forsakes those who trust in Him.
Prayer: Risen Lord Jesus, thank You that in our weakness You still call us Your brethren. Strengthen our wavering faith, quiet our fears, and draw our hearts to trust You. Help us live today in the joy of Your resurrection and the comfort of Your steadfast love. Amen.
