In Gospel of Matthew 5:13–16, Jesus Christ gives a simple but searching description of the Christian life:
“You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world.”
Jesus is not calling us to become something—we already are something because we belong to Him. The question is whether our lives reflect it.
To be salt means living with a quiet, steady distinctness in a world that is slowly decaying. When others cut corners, you walk in integrity. When truth is blurred, you hold fast to what is right. When relationships grow harsh, you bring grace. A life shaped by Christ preserves what is good and makes His goodness “tasteable” to others.
To be light means refusing to hide your faith. Not with loud self-promotion, but with visible, unmistakable difference. Your priorities, your reactions, your hope—all of it shines. In a dark world, even small acts of holiness and love carry surprising brightness.
But Jesus makes the purpose unmistakable:
“that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father.”
The goal is not admiration—it is adoration. Not that people would notice you, but that through you, they would see Him.
This kind of life cannot be manufactured by effort alone. Salt loses its saltiness when it blends in. Light disappears when it is covered. And both fade when we drift from Christ. Only as we abide in Him do we remain distinct, faithful, and useful.
So the call is simple and searching:
Where has your life blended in rather than stood out?
Where has your light been hidden rather than seen?
Come again to Christ—the true Light of the world—and let His life so fill yours that it cannot be concealed.
A life close to Jesus will always be a life that changes the world around it.
Prayer:
Father in heaven,
You are the source of all light and goodness. Apart from You, we are dim and tasteless, prone to blend into the very darkness You have called us to shine within.
Forgive us for where we have hidden our light and lost our distinctness—where fear, compromise, or distraction has made us ineffective for Your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, You are the true Light of the world. Let Your life so fill us that we would shine with clarity, humility, and love. Make us faithful as salt—preserving what is good, reflecting Your character, and pointing others to Your grace.
Holy Spirit, strengthen us to live visibly for Christ—not for our name, but for the glory of our Father. Give us courage in a dark world, integrity in quiet places, and joy that draws others to You.
May our lives be so shaped by Your presence that others see our good works and give glory to You alone.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
