Moses had every excuse. He wasn’t eloquent. He wasn’t confident. He wasn’t the right man for the job — or so he thought. Four times he pushed back against the call of God, and four times God answered him. Not with frustration, but with provision.
“Who made your mouth?” God asked. It is a piercing question. Moses was arguing his inadequacy to the One who formed him. His weakness was not a surprise to God. It was never the point.
We are prone to the same error. We inventory our limitations and conclude that God must have the wrong address. We mistake the call of God for a vote of confidence in our abilities. But God was not recruiting Moses because Moses was capable. He was sending Moses because God is mighty — and He intended to prove it through a stuttering shepherd.
This is the pattern of grace. God does not call the equipped; He equips the called. And He does so in a way that leaves no glory for the messenger.
The greater Moses, Jesus Christ, needed no such reassurance. He did not shrink from His mission, make excuses, or ask for a substitute.
Where Moses said send someone else, Jesus said here am I — send me. Where Moses approached the burning bush with reluctance, Christ walked toward the cross with resolve.
And now, through the Spirit of that same Christ, the reluctant are made willing, the weak are made bold, and the tongue-tied are given words.
Your inadequacy is not an obstacle to God’s purposes. In His hands, it is often the very means of them.
My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9
Prayer:
Lord, forgive us for treating our weakness as an argument against Your call. You are the One who made our mouths, who ordains our steps, and who accomplishes Your purposes through the most unlikely hands. We confess that we have often said, in one way or another, send someone else — and yet You have been patient with us, as You were with Moses.
Remind us that we are not sent in our own strength, but in Yours. Fix our eyes on Christ, who did not shrink back, that we might follow where He leads — not because we are able, but because He is faithful.
Go with us. Speak through us. And let no glory fall to us that belongs to You alone.
In the name of Jesus, the One who was sent and did not refuse. Amen.
