“Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil” (Proverbs 3:7).
One of the greatest dangers in the Christian life is self-reliance. When we become wise in our own eyes, we stop seeking God’s wisdom, trusting God’s Word, and depending on God’s grace. Pride quietly places us at the center of life, while humility gladly yields the throne to God.
Scripture teaches that true wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord—a reverent awe that recognizes His greatness, holiness, and authority over every area of our lives. Those who fear God do not merely know what is right; they desire to turn from evil and walk in obedience to Him.
This humility finds its perfect example in Jesus Christ. Though He possessed all wisdom, He humbled Himself, submitted perfectly to His Father, and obeyed even to the point of death on a cross. Through His life, death, and resurrection, He not only saves us from our sin but also teaches us what it means to live in humble dependence upon God.
Today, ask the Lord to guard you from the pride of being wise in your own eyes. Look to Christ for wisdom, grace, and strength. As you exalt Him above yourself, you will find the life, direction, and peace that only He can give.
A Prayer written by Tony Souder in his book Pray for Me:
Father, Your word is a well of wisdom for all who are teachable. It gives life, hope and direction for all who humble themselves to satisfy themselves in you. I pray today that we would walk in humility and look to you for wisdom, truth and hope. Help us fight the temptation to be wise in our own eyes. Grant us grace to appropriately fear and exalt you in their lives. Protect us from the self-exaltation that puts ourselves at the center of life rather than you and the good of others. Cause us to have a profound sense of your greatness, knowing we are accountable to you in all we do, say and think. Fill us with a conviction of right and wrong that leads to a relentless desire to turn from evil quickly and consistently. For your glory and our good, I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
