The Perfect Offering

God’s Holiness

Leviticus 3 and 22:17–33 remind us that God is holy and worthy of our very best. Every sacrifice brought to him had to be without blemish. A blind, lame, or defective animal was unacceptable because it communicated a diminished view of God. The quality of the sacrifice reflected the worth of the One receiving it.

These chapters also reveal God’s gracious heart. Through the peace offering, God invited his people into fellowship with himself, making a way for sinners to draw near and enjoy communion with their covenant Lord. Yet this access was never casual. His holiness called for reverence, and his glory deserved honor.

Our Imperfect Worship

In light of God’s holiness, the question naturally follows: Are we giving him our best or merely what is left over? It is easy to offer God whatever remains after our schedules, careers, hobbies, and comforts have taken priority. Yet he is worthy of far more than leftover time, attention, or devotion. As the supreme treasure of our lives, he deserves first place.

Giving God our best today may look like setting aside focused time for prayer and Scripture before the demands of the day begin, choosing integrity at work when cutting corners would be easier, or using our gifts to serve others rather than simply pursuing personal comfort.

Even as we recognize this calling, these passages expose a deeper problem. None of us is an unblemished sacrifice. Our worship falls short, our obedience is incomplete, and our hearts are often divided.

Christ the Perfect Sacrifice

This is where the good news of the gospel shines. The sacrifices of Leviticus pointed forward to Jesus Christ, the true Lamb “without blemish or spot.” He offered himself perfectly to God on our behalf, accomplishing what no animal sacrifice could ever achieve. Through his perfect sacrifice, we are welcomed and accepted by a holy God.

Our Response

Because Christ has given himself for us, our service to God is no longer an attempt to earn his favor. Instead, we serve from the security of already possessing it. In gratitude for the perfect love displayed at the cross, we offer our lives as living sacrifices, devoted to his glory and purposes.

Prayer: Father, forgive me for the ways I offer you less than you deserve. Thank you for providing the perfect sacrifice in Jesus Christ. Help me to worship you with reverence, live for your glory, and gladly offer you the best of my time, gifts, and affections. Amen.
