Trusting God with What You Long For

Hannah knew what it was like to carry a longing that wouldn’t go away. She desperately wanted a child, but year after year, nothing changed. To make matters worse, Peninnah continually provoked and humiliated her. Hannah was hurting deeply.

But what did she do with her pain? She took it to God.

“Her heart was deeply distressed, and she prayed to the LORD and wept bitterly” (1 Samuel 1:10).

I love the honesty of Hannah’s prayer. She didn’t pretend everything was fine. She didn’t minimize her disappointment. She poured out her soul before the Lord.

And here’s what strikes me: God had not answered her prayer yet, but something changed in Hannah before her circumstances changed. After she prayed, “her face was no longer sad” (v. 18).

Her circumstances were still the same. The answer had not yet come. But Hannah had placed her unanswered longing into the hands of a faithful God.

Some prayers are answered quickly, while others seem to remain unanswered for years. There are things we deeply desire, circumstances we wish God would change, and questions for which we may never receive an explanation in this life.

But perhaps that is where faith becomes most precious.

Faith is not trusting God because He gives us what we want. Faith is trusting Him because He is good—even when He doesn’t give us what we want.

And ultimately, we have something Hannah could only anticipate: Jesus. In Christ, God has already given us the greatest answer to our deepest need. We are forgiven, adopted, reconciled to God, and given the sure hope of eternal life. Because of Jesus, we can know that even when God says “wait,” He has not forgotten us.

So today, I want to keep bringing my longings to the Lord. I want to pray honestly, wait patiently, and trust Him completely. I may not know what He is doing, but I know who He is.

What unanswered longing do you need to place into the hands of your faithful Father today?

Prayer:

Lord, teach me to trust You—not merely when You answer my prayers the way I hope, but when You ask me to wait. Help me to believe that Your wisdom is greater than mine and Your love for me is secure in Christ. Amen.
