Prayers of Confession for Palm Sunday

Prayer Sample #1:
Holy Father,
long ago the crowds with incessant hallelujahs
greeted Your dearly loved Son,
but how quickly they mocked
as He went lonely to the cross.
Forgive us for the ways that we, too,
have welcomed Him only in words
and resisted His kingship.
Subdue our restless and rebellious hearts
so that we might serve You faithfully
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who is the gentle King of Glory, Amen.

Prayer Sample #2:
God, our gracious heavenly Father,
You sent the gentle King of glory to rescue us.
Forgive us for our resistance
to Your meek and humble ways.
We confess that we have leaned too much
on earthly wisdom that has produced
strife, jealousy, and selfish ambition.
May Your heavenly wisdom bring about its fruit
in our lives – peaceable relationships,
merciful hearts, a gentle manner,
a godly sincerity, and a passion for purity.
Mold us into the image of the gentle King of glory,
for we pray in His name, Amen.

Prayer Sample #3
Forgiving Father,
Your dearly beloved Son
was greeted by the crowd
with incessant hallelujahs,
but how quickly they mocked
as he went lonely to the cross.
Forgive us for the ways that we, too,
have welcomed Him only in words
and resisted His kingship.
May our hearts delight in You above all else
and may Your Son not find in our hearts
another place of crucifixion,
but a place of love, loyalty, and devotion
fit for such a gentle and gracious King.
O Christ, You were consumed with a zeal
for Your Father’s worship.
Forgive me for not having a similar zeal,
for I am consumed
with so many other pursuits and pleasures.
Free me to magnify and extol
Your name with a joyful heart,
like the children did long ago
on Your triumphal entry. AMEN.

Prayer Sample #4:
Gracious Father,
today our gentle King comes to rescue us
who struggle with a zoo of lusts
and a bedlam of ambitions.
Transform us Lord into your image of meekness and love.
Our lives and relationships
are too often marked by strife
because we are governed
by a wisdom that is earthly,
unspiritual and demonic.
Forgive us for the times that this has produced
jealousy, selfish ambition and self pity in our hearts.
May the wisdom that is from above
bring about its fruit in our lives
– peaceable relationships, merciful hearts,
a gentle manner, a godly sincerity,
and a passion for purity.
Forgive us for the times
that we have not accepted Your dealings with us as good
and have disputed with You and resisted Your will.
You are the potter and we are the clay.
Mold us into the gentle ways of King Jesus
in whose name we pray, AMEN.
