Facing the Temptations to Shrug and Scheme

Jacob and Esau. Two brothers who demonstrate two responses to the promises of God.

Esau despised his birthright. He traded eternity for a bowl of stew. He lived for what he could taste, touch, and feel in the moment. Spiritual things felt distant. Immediate comfort felt urgent.

Hendrick ter Brugghen’s Esau Selling His Birthright (c. 1627, Dutch)

Jacob, on the other hand, wanted the blessing—but often grasped for it the wrong way. He schemed. He deceived. He tried to secure by manipulation what God had already promised by grace.

One brother drifted. The other grasped. And if we’re honest, we can see ourselves in both.

Sometimes we live like Esau—too busy, too distracted, too consumed with what’s right in front of us to value communion with God. We trade prayer for productivity. We trade worship for convenience. We treat eternal things lightly.

Other times we live like Jacob—we believe God’s promises, but we don’t trust His timing. So we manage outcomes. We protect our image. We push doors open instead of waiting for God to open them.

But the good news of this story is not that Jacob tried harder. It’s that God was faithful.

  • God pursued Jacob in exile.
  • God wrestled Jacob into weakness.
  • God blessed Jacob by grace.

And both brothers point us to a better Brother—Jesus.

Where Esau despised what was eternal, Jesus treasured His Father’s will.

Where Jacob grasped for blessing, Jesus did not grasp at equality with God, but humbled Himself (Phil. 2:6–8).

Where both failed, Christ obeyed perfectly.

Because of Him, we don’t have to drift—and we don’t have to scheme.

Today, don’t despise the promises.

And don’t grasp for them.

Cling to Christ.

He is the true blessing—and He is enough.

Prayer:

Father,

We confess that we are often like Esau—trading eternal treasure for momentary comfort. And we are like Jacob—grasping, scheming, and trying to secure by effort what You have promised by grace.

Forgive us.

Thank You for sending a better Brother, the Lord Jesus—who did not grasp, who did not despise, but perfectly obeyed in our place. Thank You that in Him the true blessing is ours.

Teach us to treasure what is eternal.

Teach us to trust Your timing.

Teach us to cling to Christ alone.

Make us content in His finished work and confident in Your faithful promises.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
