John’s Gospel stands apart from the other three. While Matthew, Mark, and Luke trace the life of Jesus from earth upward, John begins before creation itself — with God. No other Gospel writer gives us such an exalted revelation of who Christ truly is: The eternal Son, the divine Word, and the One in whom all things hold together.
“In the beginning was the Word.” Not came the Word — was the Word. Before creation, before time, before anything existed, Jesus was. He didn’t enter the story; He authored it. The Word who spoke the universe into existence is the same Word who became flesh and dwelt among us.
This is the staggering claim of Christianity:The eternal God did not stay distant. He came near — as one of us, for all of us.
John calls Jesus the Word, not a word. He is not one revelation among many. He is the final, complete, perfect self-expression of God. Every page of Scripture finds its meaning in him. Every promise reaches its fulfillment in him. He is the light that shines in the darkness — and the darkness has never put it out.
Do you know him this way? Not merely as a teacher or moral example, but as the eternal, living Word — the one who holds your life, your hope, and your eternity?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You are the eternal Son, the Creator and Sustainer of all things, the perfect revelation of the Father. Take your rightful place of supremacy in my heart and in the hearts of those I love. We were made by you and for you. May we live like it. Amen.
