The Psalms are uncomfortably honest about us.

We are not basically good people who occasionally make bad choices. Sin runs deeper than that. We are born with hearts bent away from God. We justify ourselves. We minimize our sin. Sometimes we even convince ourselves that God doesn’t see what we’d rather keep hidden.

Psalm 14 doesn’t soften it: “There is none who does good, not even one.”

But here’s where the reading takes an unexpected turn.

It doesn’t leave us wallowing in our sin. It lifts our eyes to God.

Psalm 36 describes His steadfast love reaching to the heavens. His righteousness stands like the mountains. His judgments are as deep as the sea. And then comes this beautiful statement: “With you is the fountain of life.”

That’s what we need to remember when God’s Word exposes us.

Obedience does that. The harder we honestly try to obey God, the more we discover how much is wrong inside us. Try to love someone who irritates you. Forgive someone who hurt you. Control your tongue. Put God ahead of your comfort. Suddenly, sin isn’t an abstract doctrine anymore. It’s right there in your heart.

And that realization is actually a gift.

Because God doesn’t expose our sin to drive us away. He exposes it so we will come to Him.

So don’t hide today. Don’t explain your sin away. And don’t despair over it either. Confess it. Bring it into the light. Run to Christ.

The God who is holy enough to expose your sin is merciful enough to forgive it. And in Christ, your failures do not have the final word. His righteousness does.

Today, ask yourself: What sin have I been explaining, excusing, or tolerating?

Name it before God.

Then thank Him—not because your sin is small, but because His steadfast love is greater.

Obey Him today, not to earn His love. You already have it in Christ. Obey because you love Him, trust Him, and want your life to increasingly reflect the One who has rescued you.

Prayer

Father, show me my sin without allowing me to hide from it. Give me courage to confess what I have excused and humility to repent where I have resisted You. But don’t let conviction turn into despair. Turn my eyes toward Christ.

Thank You that Your mercy is greater than my sin, Your righteousness is greater than my failure, and Your steadfast love never runs out. Teach me to obey You today—not to earn Your favor, but because I already belong to You.

Make Your love more precious to me than anything this world can offer.
