When Your Resources Seem Inadequate

Judges 7:1–15

Have you ever faced a situation and wondered if you had what it takes to get through it? Perhaps you lack the strength, wisdom, or resources you need. You know what God has called you to do, but you feel inadequate for the task.

In Judges 7, Gideon knew that feeling. He gathered 32,000 men to fight the Midianites, but God told him he had too many. God gradually reduced his army until only 300 men remained. Why? So Israel would know that its victory came from the Lord, not its own strength.

God was teaching Gideon—and all of us—a lesson we are often slow to learn: Our confidence must rest not in what we have to offer, but in the God who promises to be with us.

How easily we forget this. We look at our limitations, our difficulties, and the obstacles before us, and we wonder how we will manage. We may even assume that if we had a little more strength, a little more wisdom, or a few more resources, we could finally move forward with confidence.

But God often teaches us to trust Him precisely when we feel we have so little to offer. He does not promise that every difficulty will disappear or that every undertaking will succeed as we hope. He does promise that His grace is sufficient and that His purposes will never be thwarted.

And nowhere do we see this more clearly than at the cross. Our greatest need was one we could never meet ourselves: deliverance from sin and death. Yet God accomplished what we could not through the death and resurrection of His Son. Jesus Christ is our confidence, not because we are strong, but because He is a sufficient Savior.

What does this mean for your life?

Perhaps you are facing something today that feels bigger than you. Don’t let your sense of inadequacy keep you from trusting God and doing what He has called you to do. Bring your fears to Him. Remember His promises. Take the next step of obedience, even if you cannot see how everything will work out.

You don’t have to be sufficient in yourself. Your Savior is sufficient for you.

Prayer: Father, how often I look at my weaknesses and forget Your faithfulness. Forgive me for trusting in my own strength rather than resting in Your grace. Help me to trust You when I cannot see the way forward, and give me courage to obey You even when I feel inadequate. Thank You that my hope rests not in what I can do, but in what Christ has done for me. Amen.
