A Conscience Guided by Grace

1 Corinthians 10:23–11:1

How do we know whether a decision is right? It is tempting to ask only, “Am I allowed to do this?” But Paul calls us to ask a better question: “Will this glorify God and build up others?”

Our conscience is a gift from God, but it must be shaped by His Word. Not everything permissible is beneficial, and Christian freedom is never an excuse for selfishness. Love teaches us to consider how our choices affect others, willingly setting aside our preferences when doing so serves their spiritual good.

Paul gives us this guiding principle: “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).

This is not a call to earn God’s favor through perfect decisions. In Christ, we are already recipients of God’s grace. Because Jesus willingly laid down His rights and gave Himself for us, we are free to live for something greater than ourselves. As we grow in His grace, we learn to use our freedom to love others, advance the gospel, and reflect our Savior’s character.

Before making a decision today, ask yourself: Is it consistent with God’s Word? Will it build up others? Will it bring glory to Christ?

May we be so captivated by Christ’s love that we care less about insisting on our own rights and more about serving others for His glory.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the freedom and grace I have in Jesus Christ. Shape my conscience through Your Word, guard me from selfishness, and teach me to love others as Christ has loved me. May my choices today bring You glory and help others see the beauty of Jesus. Amen.
