The Main Objective of Life

I came across an interesting quote this morning in my studies from James Montgomery Boice, in his book Foundations of the Christian Faith:

Shortly after Harvard College was founded in 1636, the trustees of the school wrote,
“Let every student be plainly instructed, and earnestly pressed to consider well that the main end of his life and studies is to know God and Jesus Christ … and therefore to lay Christ in the bottom, as the only foundation of all sound knowledge and learning.”

Harvard has forsaken the vision and priorities of its founding trustees. Yet, as leaders of our children and churches, we can rise up, pray and work to fulfill this original vision of Harvard College which is only a restatement of Jesus’ words in his high priestly prayer.

John 17:3 says: “And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”

My prayer is that your vision of the good life would center on knowing the one, true God and Jesus whom He sent and not some other vision that comes from worldly thinking and worldly values. We are such earth-bound creatures who are easily distracted by temporal concerns and who can quickly lose our zeal for the matters of eternity.

I, for one, desperately need the Spirit’s transforming work in this area of what I truly value! Let us ask the Lord to search our  hearts and transform so that we value what He values and invest our earthly lives in the things that are eternal.
