“What have you to do with us, O Son of God?” (Matthew 8:29)
The demons in Matthew 8 recognize what many humans miss: Jesus is not merely a teacher among many, but the reigning Son of God with absolute authority over every spiritual power. They obey His word instantly. They fear His presence. They know their defeat is certain.
For those who belong to Christ, this same authority is not distant—it is active and present.
Jesus’ power over spiritual forces is seen whenever the gospel breaks the grip of darkness and brings a heart from death to life. Every conversion is a kingdom victory. Every lie exposed by His Word is a stronghold falling. Every step of obedience is freedom replacing bondage.
Yet this power is often quiet rather than dramatic. Christ reigns not only in moments of visible confrontation, but in the steady overthrow of sin’s dominion—fear losing its voice, pride being humbled, and temptation losing its authority. The Word of Christ still speaks, and what it commands, darkness must yield.
Still, believers should not be surprised by resistance. The enemy remains active, but never autonomous. Every spiritual force is restrained by the risen Christ. Nothing touches His people outside His sovereign permission, and nothing can undo His final victory.
We live, then, between triumph and completion: Christ has already bound the strong man, and He will one day cast him out forever. Until that day, every act of deliverance, every moment of repentance, every advance of the gospel is a signpost that the kingdom has come near.
So take heart: the same Jesus who silenced demons with a word still reigns. And His authority has not weakened—it has only advanced.
