“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”

The Christian life is a race and not a sprint. God has called us to run with endurance—to keep going when the road is difficult, when discouragement comes, when temptation weighs us down, and when the finish line seems far away.

But endurance does not come from staring at ourselves and trying harder.

It comes from fixing our eyes on Jesus.

Jesus is the founder of our faith. He is the perfecter of our faith. He is not merely the example we imitate; He is the Savior we trust. He began the work of grace in us, He sustains us in the race, and He will bring us safely to the finish.

Think of what Jesus endured for us. He willingly embraced the cross. He bore our sin. He endured shame. He suffered in our place. And He did it “for the joy that was set before him.” Now He is risen, exalted, and seated at the right hand of the Father.

The Christ who endured the cross is the Christ who sustains His people.

Prayer:

So, Father, give those whom I love grace to run today.

When they are discouraged, remind them of Your faithfulness.
When they are weary, strengthen them with the sufficiency of Christ.
When they are tempted, give them grace to lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely.
When they have been sinned against, give them grace to forgive as they have been forgiven in Christ.
When they are distracted by lesser things, turn their eyes again toward Jesus.

Father, teach them not merely to admire Jesus from a distance, but to delight in Him—His grace, His mercy, His holiness, His sufficiency, His finished work, and His steadfast love.

Give them the joy that sustained Jesus through the cross: the joy of knowing You, the joy of belonging to You, and the joy of knowing that suffering is not the end of the story.

May their joy in Christ strengthen them when they are weak, satisfy them when the world leaves them empty, and propel them forward when they are tempted to quit.

And when they cannot see how they will finish, remind them that Jesus is already at the finish line.

He is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
He has finished His work.
He has conquered sin and death.
He is interceding for His people.
And He will faithfully bring every one of His children home.

May our lives, our endurance, and our finish all declare the greatness of Jesus Christ.
